Installation and Maintenance of the MBR Sensor

Introduction

This article provides instructions on how to handle and install the MBR sensor, checking not only the sensor but also the application, verifying the presence of liquid inside the bag.

1 — Check the integrity of the sensor

In order to validate the measurement and alarm of the MBR, its integrity must be validated and can be done by following the steps in this guide: MBR Functionality Test;

2 — Verification of the sensor installation location

 The transformer must be de-energized to access the internal part of the bag/membrane.

The MBR sensor needs to be installed inside the dry part of the bag or on the top of the membrane in the expansion tank.





It is crucial to know the location of the access flange to the transformer's expansion tank, optimizing work time along with the transformer de-energization time. The flange location can be found in the transformer's Databook; if unable to locate it, contact the manufacturer.

3 — Functional field test of the MBR

For this test, it is of utmost importance to ensure the correct functioning of the sensor. Therefore, make sure that the first step has been correctly followed and approved.

With the IED already installed in the panel, the test will be performed on the sensor to validate any alarms related to the detection of liquid inside the bag. To do this:

  1. Remove the sensor from inside the bag (or from the top of the membrane);
  2. Check if the sensor is dry;
  3. Insert the sensor into a container with liquid (oil, water, etc.);
  4. Check if the IED on the panel is alarmed;
  5. If any incongruities are found, return to the tests mentioned in step 1.

As indicated above, in this case, the sensor is intact, without an alarm when dry and alarmed in the presence of liquid. With its operation verified, it is safe to confirm the presence of liquid inside the bag if the sensor was already alarmed before the tests.

ℹ️  If the alarm is intermittent, it does not necessarily mean that the bag or membrane is ruptured. However, the presence of liquid inside the bag is certain.

The detection of liquid inside the bag may indicate:

  1. Residual oil due to some operation performed in the bag, such as the filling process;
  2. Ingress of liquid due to deteriorated silica;
  3. Ruptured bag;
  4. Others.

4 — Confirmation of bag rupture

If the alarm is valid, it is possible to analyze the bag rupture through various practical tests such as:

  1. Insert a rod, similar to a cotton swab, of sufficient length to touch the surface of the bag without damaging it. This way, it is possible to analyze the level of oil emerging on the bag/membrane;
  2. Drain the oil inside the bag and check for liquid ingress again.
